Peri-Operative Nutrition

Peri-operative nutrition refers to the nutritional care provided before, during, and after surgery to support healing, reduce complications, and improve recovery outcomes. Proper nutritional support during this critical window helps the body respond better to surgical stress, preserves muscle mass, and strengthens the immune system. Whether through diet optimization, supplements, or specialized formulas, peri-operative nutrition is an essential component of comprehensive surgical care.

Pre-Surgery (2–4 Weeks Before)

  • Protein-Rich Foods: Chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, beans, and Greek yogurt.
  • Immune Support: Include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, C, and E.
  • Carbohydrates: Choose whole grains for energy and gut health.
  • Stay Hydrated: Aim for at least 6–8 glasses of water daily.
  • Supplements (if advised):
    • Vitamin D & Calcium
    • Iron (especially for those with anemia)
    • Protein shakes if intake is low

Day Before & Day of Surgery

  • Follow Fasting Instructions Carefully
  • Carbohydrate Loading (if recommended):
    • A special clear carbohydrate drink 2–3 hours before surgery can help reduce insulin resistance.

Post-Surgery (Recovery Phase)

  • Protein Intake: Crucial for healing. Include protein at every meal.
  • Anti-inflammatory Foods: Berries, leafy greens, turmeric, olive oil.
  • Avoid: Excess sugar, alcohol, and processed foods.
  • Continue Supplements (if prescribed)
  • Small, Frequent Meals if appetite is reduced

Additional Tips

  • Speak with a Registered Dietitian if you have diabetes, kidney disease, or other health concerns.
  • Wound Healing Support: Consider arginine, glutamine, and omega-3s (under medical guidance).
