Preparing for Surgery
The time leading up to your surgery can feel overwhelming, and Dr. David Gazzaniga and his team are here to support you every step of the way. We are committed to making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Please review the following important information to ensure that you are fully prepared:
Pre-operative clearance
Pre-operative clearance is required to ensure your safety and readiness for surgery. Your health is our top priority, and we want to confirm that it is medically appropriate to proceed. All required pre-operative documents, as discussed when you scheduled your procedure, must be submitted to our office no later than 7 days prior to surgery. This clearance can be obtained through your primary care provider or a designated facility. If you have questions or need guidance, please contact our office directly.
Durable medical equipment (DME)
Based on the procedure you are scheduled for, you may need medical equipment such as a brace, sling, or crutches following surgery. You will also have the option to purchase a cold therapy unit (ice machine) to help manage post-operative pain and swelling. While the ice machine is not required, it is highly recommended. Our DME team will email you ahead of surgery with additional details. If you would like to view or obtain equipment in person, you may visit one of our designated DME locations—no appointment is necessary. For questions, please contact our DME office.
Schedule physical therapy
Physical therapy may be an essential part of your recovery. Please ensure that you schedule your sessions in advance, as directed by Dr. Gazzaniga’s team.
Initial post-operative visit
If you have not yet scheduled your initial post-operative appointment with Dr. Gazzaniga’s team, please call our office to arrange it as soon as possible.
Review surgical instructions
Please refer to Dr. Gazzaniga’s surgical instructions or pre-operative booklet for a list of medications that may need to be paused prior to surgery. It is important to follow these guidelines carefully.
Pick up post-operative medications
Be sure to obtain all prescribed medications prior to your surgery to ensure you have them on hand when you return home.
Driving restrictions
After surgery, you will not be permitted to drive if you are taking narcotic pain medications or using assistive devices such as a sling, brace, cast, or crutches. We encourage you to make transportation arrangements ahead of time and coordinate with family or friends for help with daily activities, attending physical therapy, and coming to follow-up appointments.
